Emma is the nexus of the romantic entanglement, married to Robert and having a seven-year affair with Jerry. As a gallery manager and a woman navigating the complexities of 1970s London, she initially finds a sense of liberation in her clandestine relationship with Jerry. However, the affair gradually morphs into another form of domesticity, with Emma even attempting to create a home-like environment in their shared flat. Emma is portrayed as a figure yearning for validation and emotional satisfaction outside her marriage to Robert. She becomes increasingly active in the narrative as the play unfolds backward, initiating encounters and moving towards autonomy by establishing an art gallery. Despite her strong front, Emma harbors inner insecurity and a deep-seated need for affirmation, constantly seeking validation from the male figures in her life. Her actions, such as never revealing Robert's knowledge of the affair to Jerry, leave the audience questioning her motives and the extent of her own understanding of the situation. As the play progresses, Emma's anger at Robert's infidelities, despite her own betrayals, becomes apparent, shedding light on the complexities of her emotional landscape.

Jerry, a successful literary agent and Robert's oldest friend, embarks on a passionate and impulsive affair with Emma, Robert's wife. Initially, Jerry appears to be the romantic idealist in the relationship, but as the play reveals, he is also marked by a profound naiveté and self-centeredness. He remains oblivious to Robert's knowledge of the affair for years, which highlights his failure to recognize the impact of his actions on his best friend. Jerry also appears to be blind to the possibility of his own wife, Judith, having an affair, revealing a selective unawareness of the consequences of infidelity when it's not his own. His initial seduction of Emma is portrayed as rather clumsy and impulsive, rather than suave or sophisticated. Jerry's profession as a literary agent, someone who works through the voices of others, also suggests a somewhat underdeveloped sense of his own identity. Ultimately, Jerry's character embodies the romantic ideal that is gradually eroded by the realities of deception and the slow unfolding of truths in the play.

Emma's husband and Jerry's oldest friend, and a publisher. Robert discovers the affair but keeps his knowledge secret, wielding it for psychological control. He is a realist, seemingly more adept at understanding the unspoken complexities of relationships than Jerry. His suppressed emotions can manifest in anger and violence, but he values his friendship with Jerry, possibly more than his marriage.
